Taking care of your hair under your weave

Attention ladies,

Black women wear weaves for so many different reasons. It allows us to change our looks from curly to straight and from short to long in a matter of hours. Some wear it because they don’t know how to take care of their hair and some wear it because it’s just what their hair needs. No matter what your reasons are, please remember:

Your weave is not your hair!!!!!

It is a foreign object attached to your hair for enhancement and protection purposes. The previous statement might seem a bit harsh but I’m doing it all in the name of love. The love of healthy hair, no matter the length, color or origin. Wearing weaves can be fundamental to hair growth when worn and taken care of properly. Here are a few things to be mindful of:

IMG_0074Drew's Sew In (c-part)Braiding pattern- is the foundation of a weave. There are as many patterns as there as stylist.Feel free to ask your stylist for a pattern that will allow you to reach your scalp. That way, you can cleans and moisturize with ease.

Washing & Conditioning

  1. Wash every 7-14 days
  2. Every 7 days if you workout
  3. Dilute moisturizing shampoo in an applicator bottle (1:1)
  4. Distribute shampoo evenly
  5. Rinse thoroughly
  6. repeat steps 3, 4,5 with conditioner
  7. moisturize hair
    • fill spray bottle with you favorite liquid moisturizer
    • oils and glycerin can be added to moisturizer
  8. spray hair between tracks daily
  • Deep condition hair (apply conditioner and sit under dryer for 30 minutes
  • Do not sleep with wet hair
  • Make sure to oil your hair line and other exposed hair (castor oil is good for this)
  • Always use a wide tooth comb. Using a fine tooth comb increases tension in the hair line leading to balding and alopecia.
  • remove hair extensions every 6-8 weeks
