Castor Oil: My new obsession

If anyone would have mentioned castor oil to me two months ago,I would've cringed. Thinking about castor oil always brought back awful childhood memories of my mother or aunts holding me down and sticking a teaspoon of castor oil in my mouth. In Liberia, castor oil is a common remedy for constipation.

Castor oil has been on my mind a lot lately and I need to share my new found obsession with you all. I have been using it for my hair and my skin for the last month with great results. Her is some information on why I love castor oil and ways to use it for your hair

Castor oil is a clear or sometimes pale yellow oil with little or no odor. It's is very thick and sticky but it absorbs into skin easily. Castor oil has ricinnoleic acid that makes it anti bacterial and anti fungal.

*Hair growth
Castor oil stimulates the hair follicles for new and fast hair growth. It conditions that hair and scalp which leads to healthy hair growth, thicker hair strands, and stronger hair that stays longer in the follicle(less shedding)

*Solves Dryness
Dry scalp is one of the reasons behind hair loss; Omega-9 fatty acid in castor oil keeps hair and scalp moisturized preventing dry scalp.

The first thing you need to know about castor oil is that it is an emollient. When it comes to hair, it's better to wet it before applying emollients. It helps to seal in moisture. The next thing to be mindful of is that less is more. Using more castor oil will not increase the benefits. It will only make your hair greasy and sticky.

Mixing castor oil can also give you great benefits of two oils and can thin castor oil for easier application.
* At home castor oil treatment
Wet hair
Apply castor oil to scalp ( can add to hair if mixed)
Cover hair with a plastic cap
Let sit a minimum of 20 minutes ( can leave on overnight for deeper conditioning)
Wash with moisturizing shampoo and condition

This is an excellent oil treatment for the dry winter months

I'm Back

I've been gone for quite some time now but I'm back. Just to share a bit of what has been going on with me. God has been blessing my family so much. Without him, i dont know where we would be.

Update #1: I moved 1 hour away from my job. My husband got a job two hours out of the city and was driving four hours a day for 6 months. It was tough on him, his car and our budget. So we made the move and I dont regret it. i've never lived that far out of the city before but I love it out here. its soooo peaceful.

Update#2: I am no longer a co-owner of Hairitage Creations. I decided that my education is higher on my priority list then owning a salon. Now that my husband is working, I can go to school full time and work full time. Going to school full time and taking courses that I should have taken before has definitly been an eye opener. I"ve come to realize that there is more to business then I know.

Update#3: My husband and I have been put in charge of some of the coolest kids walking the earth, Ou church's youth group. that thas taken alot of my time but time flies when you're having fun. These kids are so amazing and they have so much potential. Serving youth has always been something that I wanted to do and being with these kids and doing different projects not only reminds me of when I was their age and the struggles I faced but how much fun I had. Working with them takes up a lot of time but it certianly is not time wasted.

Okay, I'm talking too much. Here is a video of my hair journey and my different styles over the last year. My hair has grown alot thanks to protective styling. I will be updating frequently and tell you all about how I take care of my hair.

Prevention is better than a cure

cbsmoothDoes your hair always feel dry and brittle? Is it always falling in the sink after combing and styling? Chances are, you need a DEEP CONDITIONING TREATMENT. Deep conditioning treatments are often mistaken for a “conditioner”, so let me break it down for you.

A conditioner is used after you wash your and it does not penetrate the hair shaft. It coats and provides a short term protection for your hair by providing a thin layer over the hair that makes it silky smooth and allows the hair to battle everyday wear and tear. It is also used to balance the ph. in the hair and to close and seal the cuticles on the hair shaft.

Deep Conditioning Treatment

Moisturizing- is the most requested treatment. It is used to increase the amount of moisture within the hair. It’s great for hair that has been dried out from heat and chemical damage (curling iron, relaxers, perms, color).Doing frequent moisturizing treatment on dry and frizzy hair can give it luster and bounce.

Reconstructor- are protein based treatment that make the hair stronger. I find them to be more effective on chemically damaged hair that is fragile and breaking. Reconstructors are often a balance of moisture and protein and are best used immediately after a chemical service. There is usually a noticeable difference in the hair after the first two reconstructive treatments. The hair feels stronger and there is less hair falling into the sink after combing.

When do I treat my hair?

Always treat your hair after a chemical service. Chemical services opens the hair cuticle and causes damage. Performing a treatment immediately after allows the treatment to penetrate the hair shaft easier because cuticles are already lift. It also helps to seal the cuticle better. I also advice my clients to treat their hair every 2-3 weeks depending on the condition of their. For me, “prevention is better than cure’, its better to treat your hair to avoid breakage.

Severe breakage- treat twice a week. Alternate between protein and moisture. After two weeks, treat once a week. After three weeks, treat once every two weeks. Remember to alternate the treatment because too much of one type can cause an overload.

Remember, “Prevention is better than cure"
