Castor Oil: My new obsession

If anyone would have mentioned castor oil to me two months ago,I would've cringed. Thinking about castor oil always brought back awful childhood memories of my mother or aunts holding me down and sticking a teaspoon of castor oil in my mouth. In Liberia, castor oil is a common remedy for constipation.

Castor oil has been on my mind a lot lately and I need to share my new found obsession with you all. I have been using it for my hair and my skin for the last month with great results. Her is some information on why I love castor oil and ways to use it for your hair

Castor oil is a clear or sometimes pale yellow oil with little or no odor. It's is very thick and sticky but it absorbs into skin easily. Castor oil has ricinnoleic acid that makes it anti bacterial and anti fungal.

*Hair growth
Castor oil stimulates the hair follicles for new and fast hair growth. It conditions that hair and scalp which leads to healthy hair growth, thicker hair strands, and stronger hair that stays longer in the follicle(less shedding)

*Solves Dryness
Dry scalp is one of the reasons behind hair loss; Omega-9 fatty acid in castor oil keeps hair and scalp moisturized preventing dry scalp.

The first thing you need to know about castor oil is that it is an emollient. When it comes to hair, it's better to wet it before applying emollients. It helps to seal in moisture. The next thing to be mindful of is that less is more. Using more castor oil will not increase the benefits. It will only make your hair greasy and sticky.

Mixing castor oil can also give you great benefits of two oils and can thin castor oil for easier application.
* At home castor oil treatment
Wet hair
Apply castor oil to scalp ( can add to hair if mixed)
Cover hair with a plastic cap
Let sit a minimum of 20 minutes ( can leave on overnight for deeper conditioning)
Wash with moisturizing shampoo and condition

This is an excellent oil treatment for the dry winter months
